When a plumbing quote makes sense

A quote is a promise: this work, this price. Send one when you have seen the job and nothing important is hidden, for example replacing a toilet, installing a garbage disposal or swapping a water heater in the same spot. If the problem might be inside a wall or under a slab, send an estimate instead so the price can change with the customer's approval.

What to include in a plumbing quote

Write a scope the customer cannot misread

VagueClear
Bathroom plumbingReplace upstairs toilet with customer-supplied toilet; new wax ring, bolts and supply line
Water heaterReplace 50-gal gas tank water heater in garage; includes expansion tank, permit and haul-away of old unit
Fix leakRepair leaking joint on copper supply line under kitchen sink, access through cabinet

The clear version protects both of you: everyone knows what is in the price, and anything else is obviously extra.

When you find a surprise

Old homes hide things: rotted subfloor under a toilet, a shut-off valve that will not close, galvanized pipe that crumbles. Stop, show the customer, and write a short change order or new quote for the extra work before you continue. A photo in your message helps the customer say yes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a plumbing quote and an estimate?

A quote is a fixed price for a clearly defined job. An estimate is an informed guess that can change if hidden problems are found, such as leaks inside walls or a damaged sewer line.

Can the price change after I send a plumbing quote?

Not for the work listed. If you find extra problems or the customer wants more work, quote the extra separately and get approval first.

Should I list the fixture model on the quote?

Yes. Naming the brand, model or size of the faucet, toilet or water heater avoids arguments about what was promised.

Is the plumbing quote template free?

Yes. Make and download unlimited quotes. Free PDFs include a small line at the bottom saying they were made with QuoteToolbelt.
